Former Madagascar president Didier Ignace Ratsiraka has died at the age of 84, the country’s president has announced.
On Sunday, March 28, 2021, the former president, Admiral Didier Ignace Ratsiraka, died at the age of 84.
“Madagascar has lost a patriot,” President Andry Rajoelina wrote on Twitter.
The President has sent his condolences to his relatives, the military community and the citizens of Madagascar.
The former president died at the Soavinandriana military hospital in the capital, Antananarivo, where he had been receiving medical treatment since March 22.
Bw. Ratsiraka, who came to power as a low-ranking officer in the navy in 1975, led Madagascar in 1991 and later again from 1996 to 2002.
After losing the 2002 election, he left the country for France and returned home nine years later.
While in exile in 2003, a court in Madagascar sentenced him to 10 years in prison for corruption.
Several years later, the current president released him and allowed him to return home.
